So you’re nervous about flying? Here are some tips:

Yes, flying can be nerve-wracking, especially if its something you seldom do; but can be so even if you are a more frequent flyer. There are a lot of different people to contend with in crowded spaces, and not to mention that you don’t have much control over anything. What do you mean you lost my bag? The person next to me is eating the worst smelling food! That kid won’t stop screaming and kicking the back of my seat! Oh NO! Turbulence!?!

Here are just a few tips and tricks to help you get through your next upcoming jet set unscathed:

Make sure you give yourself more than enough time to park, check a bag, get through security and to the gate. You never know when TSA may be short staffed and everything is taking twice as long. Showing up with some time to spare can relieve some stress and helps you to be able to control what you can.

  • Bring a good book or headphones and listen to some relaxing music on the flight. Most flights have WiFi and some domestic carriers have seat-back TVs which is a great way to get your mind off flying.

  • Keep hydrated and don’t be afraid to talk to the flight attendants. They’re very friendly and will help you if they know you’re nervous. Also a helpful tip is to observe flight attendants body language during turbulence. They work in airplanes 100s of hours per month so if they seem to not be worried then you know you can rest easy.

  • Throw up a little prayer or work on you meditation skills during takeoff and landing.

  • If you think you need a little more than these relaxing tips then set up an appointment here at Sweetgrass Psychiatry. One of our providers will be able to walk you through your fear and if needed prescribe you a medication to help take the edge off flying. Some common anxiolytics used for flying are Hydroxyzine, Ativan, Valium, propranolol, Klonopin and Xanax. Discuss with your provider if one of these medications may be helpful for your fear of flying. We don’t want your anxiety to get in the way of your goals!
