How Do I Know If I Found the Right Therapist?
Edited by Brittany Albright MD, MPH
One of the most effective ways to treat depression and anxiety is through psychotherapy. Research continues to show that it is not the type of therapy that matters most in treatment outcomes - it is the relationship you build with your therapist. I compare finding your therapist to like dating - it has to be a “fit.” This is a personal and unique process and finding the ideal therapist will be different for everyone. At Sweetgrass Psychiatry, we always encourage you to ensure that your therapist has appropriate South Carolina state licensure, training, and credentialing.
Here are several signs that you have found a right therapist for you:
You Feel Comfortable With Them: This is arguably the most important factor. You should feel safe, comfortable, and able to be honest with your therapist. This doesn't necessarily mean you'll feel comfortable right away — opening up about personal topics can be challenging — but you should generally feel like your therapist is someone you can trust.
They Specialize in Your Needs: If you're seeking therapy for a specific issue (like depression, anxiety, trauma, etc.), it can be helpful to find a therapist who specializes in that area. They should be able to understand your problem and guide you through it in a way that's helpful and effective.
They Respect Your Boundaries: A good therapist will respect your boundaries and work with you at your own pace. They should never push you to do or talk about something you're not ready for.
You Feel Understood and Validated: Your therapist doesn't have to agree with you on everything, but they should understand and validate your feelings. They should be able to empathize with you and make you feel heard.
They Challenge You (In a Good Way): While a therapist should validate your feelings, they should also challenge you when necessary. This might involve pointing out harmful patterns, challenging negative beliefs, or encouraging you to try new coping strategies.
You're Making Progress: Over time, you should start to notice some positive changes. Maybe you're feeling less anxious, or you're having an easier time managing your symptoms. Maybe you're just starting to understand yourself better. Everyone's progress will look different, but the important thing is that you're moving forward.
Their Approach Aligns With Your Preferences: Different therapists might use different therapeutic techniques (like cognitive-behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, psychodynamic therapy, etc.). You might find that you prefer one approach over others, so it can be helpful to find a therapist who uses the approach you like.
Logistical Compatibility: Last but not least, consider practical factors. Does the therapist's availability align with your schedule? Can you afford their rates (or do they accept your insurance)? Is their office located in a place you can get to easily? All of these things can affect your experience with therapy.
Remember that it's okay if you don't find the right therapist right away. It might take some time to find someone you click with, and it's okay to switch therapists if the first one (or few) doesn't work out. The important thing is that you're taking steps towards getting the help you need.
